There’s been a lot of media chatter (not undeserved) about Cambridge Analytica getting a hold of a ton of Facebook data. It turns out that the reason this occurred is that Cambridge Analytica had a Facebook app, “This Is Your Digital Life”, that was used by a large number of people. This app scraped all of their users data, and any data that was shared with friends of the person using the app.

Facebook now has a tool that shows you what information was likely collected about you by Cambridge Analytica. Once signed into Facebook, go to https://www.facebook.com/help/1873665312923476, and you will see what was likely shared to Cambridge Analytica.

If you did not use “This Is Your Digital Life”, and you were cautious about what you shared online, they likely did not make off with much of your information. If you haven’t been so cautious, now’s the time to clean house. Remove any Facebook apps you don’t currently use, and research the ones you wish to keep to ensure they’re trustworthy. You can also limit past public posts by visiting https://www.facebook.com/settings?tab=privacy&section=masher

These won’t fix any information that’s already out in the wild, but will limit future exposure of your Facebook information. Moving forward, remember that ANYTHING you post to Facebook (or anywhere else online) can be collected and used in any way. Think twice before posting something your worst enemy could use against you if given the opportunity.
